Design, prestige, beauty...definitely the
first image that hits your mind when you
think of fashion. Other than top models
on stage, the fashion designer is the person
we all see and know, and identify with a
brand name or a look. A career as a fashion
designer is especially suited for people
who yearn to express their talent in a highly
creative field that changes constantly and
is very competitive. Fashion designers have
to be on a constant lookout for inspiration
wherever a "hot" new idea or trend
emerges and becomes the basis for a new
collection.
What
do designers do every day? They research
ideas, trends, styles and materials everywhere,
choosing fabrics, textures and colors that
will inspire them. They create new designs
of clothing for different target markets
and clienteles. They make illustrations,
sketches, samples and prototypes. They refine
their patterns, to make sure of a perfect
fit.
CARREER PROSPECTS
Fashion
designers can become entrepreneurs and have
their own boutiques or collections; they
can also work for manufacturers, importers
or exporters. An ever-increasing number
of retailers employ designers to create
in-house branded lines. Someone who has
studied fashion design can also have very
satisfying careers as a stylist, a pattern
designer or pattern maker, as a costume
designer or fashion coordinator for movies,
television, theatres and shows, for advertising
and, more recently, for film clips used
to promote pop music. There are also career
opportunities as illustrators or fashion
reporters for magazines, newspapers and
television.
